Portugal enacts law banning full-face veils in public spaces
Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro signed into law a bill that prohibits the wearing of garments that conceal the face in public spaces. The legislation, colloquially referred to as the "burqa law," was passed by the national parliament in July following an initiative led by right-wing parties. While the president acknowledged the bill addresses a matter of high social and cultural sensitivity, he stated that the face should be considered a central element of human identity and communication.
The law was adopted with the support of the ruling right-wing coalition and the far-right, while left-wing parties voted against the measure. In addition to banning face-covering attire that prevents identification, the legislation also formally prohibits any form of coercion intended to force individuals to cover their faces. The move reflects ongoing political debates in the country regarding integration and public identification standards.
