Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman criticizes Greek Cypriot diplomatic approach
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman has criticized the Greek Cypriot side for allegedly pressuring foreign embassies to avoid meetings with his special representative, Mehmet Dana. Speaking in interviews on August 19 and 20, 2026, Erhurman argued that such actions undermine trust, noting that Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou held similar meetings with foreign diplomats two weeks prior to explain his side's positions.
Separately, Erhurman addressed reports in Greek Cypriot media regarding potential government efforts to discourage Greek Cypriots from applying to the Immovable Property Commission in the occupied territories. He defended the commission as an ECHR-recognized effective domestic remedy for property claims pending a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. Erhurman claimed the committee would be strengthened despite current challenges and noted that no reciprocal mechanism exists in the south for Turkish Cypriot property claims. He emphasized that the property issue can only be resolved through a comprehensive settlement, rather than through unilateral attempts to criminalize or obstruct individual applications.
Erhurman has called upon the European Union and the United Nations to examine the reported diplomatic interference, questioning whether these actions serve to build or destroy mutual confidence between the two communities.
