Woman killed by bear in Altai Mountains
A 29-year-old woman from Novosibirsk was killed by a bear on August 19, 2026, while camping in the village of Artybash in Russia’s Altai Mountains. According to reports from the TASS news agency, the animal dragged the woman from her tent into the surrounding forest, inflicting fatal injuries. Despite attempts by her partner and other bystanders to distract the bear and intervene, the attack proved fatal.
Local authorities are currently investigating the incident. In response to the increasing frequency of bear sightings and interactions with humans in the region, the civil protection agency has issued urgent warnings to tourists. Officials are reportedly considering the implementation of a curfew in the area to prevent further tragedies. This incident follows a similar fatal bear attack that occurred in mid-July in the Magadan region of the Russian Far East, underscoring the ongoing risks associated with wildlife in the country.
