Supreme Court rejects request to cancel arrest warrant for Larnaca motorcyclist
On July 31, 2026, at approximately 7:35 p.m., an incident occurred on Agkyras Street in Larnaca, where two police officers from the Z-Team of the Traffic Department attempted to stop two large-displacement scooters. The operators, who were not wearing helmets, failed to comply with police signals. During the encounter, one of the riders, identified in court documents as L.Z., allegedly struck a police officer with his vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, the District Court of Larnaca issued an arrest warrant for L.Z. on August 1, 2026, in connection with eight alleged offenses, including assault resulting in actual bodily harm. The suspect subsequently filed an application for certiorari with the Supreme Court, seeking to invalidate the arrest warrant. However, the Supreme Court rejected the application, ruling that the evidence provided was sufficient to establish a reasonable suspicion of the suspect's involvement in the offenses and finding no jurisdictional error in the lower court's decision.
As the arrest warrant remains valid, law enforcement authorities are moving forward with the case. The suspect faces multiple charges stemming from the July incident, and the legal process will continue within the Larnaca District Court jurisdiction.
