UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledges to house all rough sleepers by Christmas
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to provide housing for all rough sleepers across England by Christmas. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to address homelessness, a policy priority Burnham previously pursued during his tenure as the mayor of Greater Manchester, where it yielded mixed results.
To achieve this goal, the government has unveiled an emergency funding package of 102 million pounds, which complements a previously announced 340 million pounds. Local officials will have the authority to manage these funds and determine the most effective support strategies for their respective communities. The program aims to provide long-term housing for 1,200 individuals over the next three years and offer support services, including psychiatric care, to approximately 3,000 people over the next five years.
Since taking office on July 20, the Prime Minister has emphasized his commitment to ending street homelessness. The current focus is on decentralizing the response by empowering local authorities to tailor aid programs to their specific regional needs.
