Environmental concerns raised over illegal activity at Lara Beach

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, reports surfaced of bathers violating environmental protection regulations at Lara Beach in Cyprus. Despite strict prohibitions enforced by the Fisheries Department, visitors were seen setting up umbrellas and tents on the protected coastline. These restrictions, which include bans on overnight stays, camping equipment, and certain recreational activities, are in effect from June 1 to September 30 to facilitate the nesting of sea turtles.

Andreas Kyriakou, president of the Chloraka Environmental Cultural Association, has formally requested immediate intervention from the Commissioner for the Environment. He questioned the effectiveness of state oversight, highlighting that Lara is an ecologically vital habitat that requires strict enforcement of existing legislation. While the Fisheries Department confirmed that its control units conduct patrols to ensure compliance, the persistent presence of unauthorized facilities has sparked significant public and environmental concern.
