New wildfire breaks out west of Madrid
On August 19, 2026, a new wildfire erupted near the town of Aldea del Fresno, approximately 50 kilometers west of Madrid, Spain. The fire, fueled by high temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius and strong winds, prompted immediate emergency response efforts. Authorities deployed nine firefighting aircraft to combat the blaze. Residents of Aldea del Fresno, numbering about 3,500, have been ordered to remain in their homes, while authorities have proceeded with the evacuation of residential areas located on the outskirts of the town.
This incident occurs only weeks after the region experienced its most significant wildfires in history during July. Those previous fires impacted 17 municipalities in the Madrid region alone, destroying approximately 270,000 stremmata (27,000 hectares) of land and forcing nearly 60,000 people to flee their homes in Madrid and the neighboring province of Avila. The current situation remains critical as fire crews struggle to contain the flames amidst the ongoing heatwave and difficult weather conditions.
