84-year-old survivor rescued three days after Indonesia earthquake

An 84-year-old paralyzed woman, Paulina Pobi, was pulled alive from the ruins of her home on Tuesday, three days after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the island of Flores in Indonesia. The disaster, which occurred early Saturday morning, has resulted in at least 73 confirmed deaths and left more than 900 people injured. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), nearly 60,000 people have been displaced as the quake destroyed hundreds of homes. Pobi had been trapped under collapsed bamboo walls in the village of Nitunglea, which had been isolated by a landslide triggered by the seismic activity.

Local official Rudolfus Riba described the rescue as a "miracle," noting that Pobi was found in good health despite suffering from weakness due to dehydration and lack of food. Her family, initially assuming she had been evacuated to a shelter, returned to the site to search for her. Since Saturday, the region has experienced over 3,000 aftershocks, with at least 86 being significantly powerful. Pobi was safely transported to a local health center for medical evaluation and care following her ordeal.
