New earthquakes strike Flores region in Indonesia following deadly tremor

A series of earthquakes has struck the Flores region in Indonesia this week, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis following a devastating 7.7-magnitude tremor that hit the area on Saturday. On Wednesday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded a 5.7-magnitude quake at a depth of 10 kilometers. This was followed by a 5.9-magnitude seismic event on Thursday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also reported a 10-kilometer focal depth. There have been no immediate reports of additional casualties or damage from these latest tremors.

The initial earthquake on Saturday resulted in at least 70 fatalities and left nearly 1,200 people injured. The disaster led to the displacement of over 59,000 residents and caused widespread damage or destruction to thousands of buildings, as well as triggering landslides. Since the primary shock, authorities have recorded more than 3,000 aftershocks, keeping the population in a state of high alert.

Emergency services are currently managing the aftermath, with thousands of displaced individuals residing in open-air shelters due to fears of further seismic activity. Recovery operations remain ongoing as the region struggles to stabilize after the significant loss of life and infrastructure.
