Cyprus water sports association warns of illegal and dangerous practices

The Pancyprian Water Sports Association has issued a formal warning regarding the rising dangers faced by swimmers and water sports enthusiasts on Cyprus beaches during the peak summer season. Association president Dimitris Hatzidimitriou reported that jet skis and pleasure craft are frequently being operated by minors or inexperienced individuals, often without mandatory accident insurance coverage. This issue is particularly concerning when these operators transport families or groups, significantly increasing the risk of maritime accidents.

Beyond inexperience, the industry is grappling with a surge in illegal operators who bypass regulatory standards. Hatzidimitriou noted that these unauthorized activities are increasingly visible through online advertisements and the presence of vessels at sea that are neither owned by licensed professionals nor private owners. The combination of high seasonal traffic and lack of proper oversight has created a hazardous environment for the public. The association is highlighting these lapses to raise awareness among beachgoers and authorities regarding the potential legal and physical consequences of participating in unregulated water sports activities.
