Redevelopment of the historic Agios Ioannis district in Larnaca begins
Construction work for the long-awaited redevelopment of the historic Agios Ioannis district in Larnaca officially commenced in early August. The project, which faced over a decade of delays, aims to revitalize the neglected neighborhood within a 24-month timeframe. The contract has been awarded to Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Contractors & Developers Limited, a firm previously involved in several other major municipal projects in Larnaca, such as the renovation of Alkis and Acropolis squares and the Pattichio Park.
The initiative has a total estimated cost of €6,272,000 plus VAT and is being co-funded by the Republic of Cyprus and the Municipality of Larnaca. While the transformation promises significant upgrades to the area's appearance and prospects, progress remains contingent upon the absence of further complications related to potential archaeological discoveries during excavation.
Currently, work is focused on an existing park within the neighborhood, while private investments, including the opening of a restaurant in a renovated traditional house, have already begun to draw more visitors. To ensure transparency, the Municipality of Larnaca has scheduled a meeting with local residents on Wednesday, August 26, to discuss the implementation process and address potential concerns.
