AEK Athens signs defender Babis Lykogiannis
AEK Athens has reached a two-year agreement with 33-year-old Greek defender Babis Lykogiannis to reinforce the team's left-back position. The signing follows the loan of James Penrice to Rangers, which left Stavros Pilios as the club's only option in that defensive role. Lykogiannis, who was a free agent after his contract with Bologna expired, has spent the last 11 years playing abroad.
The transfer was approved by head coach Marko Nikolic, despite the move being previously rejected in January 2025 under the team's former management structure. During his final season with Bologna, the player recorded 18 appearances across all competitions. Beyond his primary role as a left-back, Lykogiannis is expected to provide tactical flexibility by serving as a central defender when needed. The player is already in Athens and is set to be registered for the club's European competition squad in the near future.
