AEK Athens to sign defender Charalambos Lykogiannis
AEK Athens is finalizing the signing of 32-year-old Greek defender Charalambos Lykogiannis to strengthen its defensive line. The player, who has been a free agent following his departure from the Italian club Bologna, has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract. This move comes as the team urgently sought a replacement for left-back James Penrais, who was loaned to Rangers, leaving Stavros Pilios as the only natural option in that position.
The transfer represents a return to Greece for Lykogiannis, who has spent the last 11 years playing abroad, including stints at Sturm Graz and Cagliari. While his acquisition was considered by AEK in January 2025, the deal did not proceed at that time under former coach Matias Almeyda. However, current manager Marko Nikolic has approved the transfer. Lykogiannis, who was recently spotted attending a match in Athens, is noted for his versatility, as he can play both as a left-back and as a central defender.
While most reports confirm the agreement, some sources vary slightly on the player's age, citing either 32 or 33. The player is expected to be registered for the team's European roster following the finalization of minor procedural details.
