Cyprus teacher unions to meet on education reforms
The three major Cypriot educational organizations—POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK—have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to discuss recent government proposals. The meeting will take place at 12:00 at the POED headquarters in Nicosia to address key institutional changes.
The primary focus of the agenda is the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth (YPAN) proposal regarding a new appointment system for teachers. Furthermore, the organizations intend to evaluate the Ministry of Labor’s recent proposal concerning pension reform. The meeting serves as a platform to coordinate the unions' positions on these matters, specifically focusing on potential concerns and established 'red lines' regarding the pension changes.
This meeting follows ongoing dialogues between the government and social partners. While these issues have previously sparked questions among stakeholders, this upcoming discussion is intended to consolidate a unified approach among the three unions before further negotiations with the relevant ministries occur.
