Severe storms and tornadoes cause casualties and destruction in Germany
Severe storms accompanied by two tornadoes struck parts of Germany overnight on August 20, 2026, causing widespread property damage and casualties. The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has issued warnings for further extreme weather, particularly in the southern states of Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria.
In the town of Waldorf, located in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a 58-year-old woman was killed after a tree was uprooted by the storm and fell onto a shelter where she and a 47-year-old companion were hiding. The 47-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Across the region, the storm caused extensive infrastructure damage, including collapsed walls, falling building facades, and numerous downed trees. A tornado was also reported in the state of Brandenburg, where a tree collapsed onto a residential roof.
Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage as cleanup operations begin. Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant as the meteorological service indicates that additional dangerous storms may impact the region in the near future.
