Halloumi ranks fifth in global gourmet export list
Cypriot halloumi cheese has secured the fifth position on the TasteAtlas list of the world’s most exported gourmet products. This ranking is considered significant given the limited production capacity of Cyprus compared to major global exporters such as Italy, France, and Spain. The data shows that halloumi exports reach 42.43 million kilograms, generating an estimated annual value of $350 million. With an average market price of approximately $8.25 per kilogram, halloumi outperformed established international products, including Gorgonzola, Prosciutto di Parma, and Roquefort.
The global ranking, led by products such as Grana Padano, Scottish farmed salmon, and feta, highlights the strong international presence and versatility of the Cypriot cheese. Halloumi’s performance is attributed to its rapid expansion into diverse international markets. The figures emphasize that despite its lower price point compared to high-end aged cheeses or cured meats, the massive export volume secures its place as a top-tier global food commodity.
