Ministers of Justice and Agriculture discuss cooperation and wildfire prevention

On August 20, 2026, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fytiris, met with the newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Christos Senekis, at the Ministry of Agriculture. The meeting was primarily ceremonial, marking the assumption of duties by Mr. Senekis, but also served as a platform to coordinate policy across both ministries.

The ministers reviewed current collaborative efforts regarding civil protection, environmental safety, animal welfare, and crisis management. A central focus of their discussion was improving operational readiness to prevent and combat forest fires. To support this goal, they examined the integration of modern technological tools and equipment. This initiative is part of a broader mandate following a recent Council of Ministers decision to implement the second phase of a Holistic Surveillance System, which involves an investment of approximately 25.5 million euros.

Moving forward, the two ministries intend to maintain close cooperation at both political and operational levels to maximize their combined resources. Further efforts will focus on operationalizing the new surveillance technology to improve response times in high-risk areas.
