Public dispute over patient management with post-operative complications in Nicosia
A public controversy emerged in Cyprus on August 20, 2026, following allegations by Disy MP and former Health Minister George Pamboridis regarding the treatment of a patient with severe post-operative complications. Pamboridis claimed that the private Apollonion Hospital in Nicosia refused to admit the patient due to a lack of beds, and that the Nicosia General Hospital similarly failed to provide necessary care. The MP stated that if the patient's condition worsened, criminal liability would arise for those involved.
The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) denied these claims, asserting that medical specialists at the Nicosia General Hospital never refused care. OKYPY argued that maintaining care under the initial surgical team was the medically appropriate choice for the patient's history. This led to a public exchange between the MP and the organization, with Pamboridis criticizing the lack of admission despite two visits to the Emergency Department.
On August 21, Apollonion Hospital clarified that it successfully operated on the patient and she remains in stable condition. The hospital criticized OKYPY for making inaccurate public statements and called for a full investigation into the matter. The patient is currently recovering, with a long-term prognosis complicated by pre-existing conditions and a multi-drug resistant infection.
