Cyprus police conduct nationwide enforcement operations and safety campaigns

Over the past few days, the Cyprus Police executed a series of intensive, coordinated operations across urban areas to prevent crime and maintain public order. During these overnight patrols, officers arrested 14 individuals for offenses including drug possession, illegal residency, and various traffic violations. Authorities stopped 746 vehicles, checked 997 occupants, and inspected 51 premises, resulting in 357 traffic citations, 128 of which were for speeding. Additionally, 20 vehicles were impounded, and officers conducted 146 breathalyser tests alongside drug screenings.

In parallel with these enforcement efforts, the police have launched a nationwide road safety campaign running from August 24 to August 30, 2026. This initiative focuses on combating distracted driving, specifically the use of mobile phones or handheld objects, which authorities identify as a leading cause of fatal and serious road collisions. Citing data from 2023 to 2025, officials noted that distracted driving accounted for 22.1% of road deaths and 29.4% of serious injuries during that period. The police force has confirmed that operations to enhance public safety will continue on a daily basis.
