Cyprus police conduct nationwide security operations and traffic campaigns

Between August 22 and 24, 2026, the Cyprus Police conducted a series of intensified preventative operations and patrols across urban areas to maintain public order and address criminality. During this period, police arrested a total of 37 individuals across various separate operations for offenses including illegal residence, drug possession, assault on police officers, weapon possession, and traffic-related crimes. Authorities checked over 2,200 vehicles and conducted dozens of inspections at various premises, issuing hundreds of traffic violation reports, including many for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Simultaneously, the police launched a dedicated road safety campaign during the weekend of August 22–23, focusing on the mandatory use of seatbelts by all passengers. Following this, a new nationwide campaign was scheduled to begin on August 24 and run until August 30, 2026. This second initiative focuses on distracted driving, specifically the use of mobile phones and other objects while behind the wheel. Official data from 2023–2025 indicates that distracted driving is a leading cause of road accidents, accounting for over 22% of road fatalities and nearly 30% of serious injuries in that period. The police continue to emphasize that these actions are part of a daily, ongoing strategy to enhance public safety.
