Cyprus police conduct nationwide security operations and traffic crackdowns
Cyprus police have executed a series of nationwide security operations intended to maintain public order and prevent criminal activity. During operations conducted on the night of August 21, 2026, officers inspected 662 vehicles and 865 individuals, resulting in the arrest of 16 people. The detainees face various charges, including illegal possession of narcotics, illegal residency, assaulting police officers, and carrying knives. Additionally, officers carried out 60 checks on commercial premises, issuing five reports for various infractions.
Simultaneously, traffic enforcement was intensified across the island. Police issued 380 traffic citations, with 131 specifically for speeding, and 16 vehicles were impounded. Authorities also identified 15 drivers under the influence of alcohol and four under the influence of drugs. Following these actions, police have announced a focused two-day campaign for August 22-23, 2026, targeting the use of seat belts and child restraint systems. This follows a significant enforcement period earlier this year where 4,075 complaints were filed for seat belt violations between January and June. The initiative aims to improve road safety and reduce fatal traffic collisions.
