Cyprus police conduct nationwide security operations and traffic safety campaign

Over the past two nights, the Cyprus Police have carried out extensive nationwide security operations aimed at preventing criminal activity and ensuring public order. Reports differ slightly on the scale of these operations, likely reflecting different reporting windows; earlier reports noted four arrests, while later data confirmed 16 arrests for offenses including drug possession, illegal residency, assault on a police officer, and carrying a knife. During these patrols, police stopped hundreds of vehicles and conducted dozens of premise inspections, resulting in 380 traffic citations and 16 vehicle impoundments. Authorities also reported that 15 drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol, with four others testing positive for drug use.

Simultaneously, the police have launched a focused traffic safety campaign scheduled for August 22-23, 2026. This initiative emphasizes the mandatory use of seat belts and child restraint systems for both drivers and passengers. The campaign is part of a broader effort to mitigate the frequency of serious and fatal road collisions. Statistics provided by the authorities reveal that between January 1 and June 30, 2026, police issued 4,075 fines for seat belt violations and 178 for unsecured child seating, highlighting a persistent issue with road safety compliance in the country.
