Safety concerns regarding pedestrian traffic on the old Nicosia-Limassol road
Lefkara Mayor Sophocles Sophocleous has issued a formal warning regarding pedestrian safety on the old Nicosia–Limassol intercity road, specifically between the areas of Skarinou and Kofinou. In a letter dated August 19, 2026, sent to Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis, the mayor highlighted that residents of the Kofinou Reception Centre for International Protection frequently walk along the road during evening hours to access local dining and recreational facilities.
Sophocleous noted that the existing infrastructure, characterized by a lack of adequate lighting, sidewalks, and parking, is insufficient to support this level of foot traffic. He expressed heightened concern for weekends, when increased traffic volumes coincide with social events such as weddings. The mayor has already consulted with the local Kofinou police department, which confirmed awareness of the issue. He is calling for immediate, comprehensive interventions beyond mere police enforcement to prevent potential accidents. The mayor plans to hold a meeting with all relevant stakeholders to discuss long-term solutions and safety improvements for the area.
