Cyprus faces multiple power outages due to technical and grid issues
Cyprus experienced two separate power supply disruptions on August 21 and 22, 2026, impacting various districts across the island. The first incident, occurring on Friday, August 21, at approximately 10:40 a.m., resulted in a load shedding of 165 megawatts. According to officials from the Transmission System Operator (TSOC) and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), this was caused by a temporary failure in telecommunication connections between large photovoltaic parks and the distribution control center, which prevented proper system monitoring.
Following the Friday incident, a second outage occurred early Saturday morning at 05:51 a.m. The TSOC confirmed this was caused by a technical fault in the 'Part B' section of the power network within the occupied areas, which affected the interconnected grid. Electricity was restored by 06:09 a.m. Saturday. The Fire Service reported dozens of emergency calls during the Friday blackout, primarily from citizens trapped in elevators in Nicosia and Limassol. Authorities are currently investigating the communication failures and are working to install backup telecommunication links to prevent future recurrences of such instability.
