Widespread power outage affects all districts of Cyprus
A widespread power outage occurred across Cyprus shortly before 11:00 am on Friday, August 21, 2026, impacting all six districts of the island. Reports indicate that the disruption was caused by a significant loss in power generation. While the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) confirmed the generation system failure, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) has been identified as the authority responsible for managing the situation.
Technical crews were immediately deployed to address the fault, with some reports specifically pointing to a generator issue at the Vasiliko power station. The blackout has led to operational challenges, including the overloading of the EAC’s website, which displayed service errors. Furthermore, the Fire Service reported a surge in emergency calls, particularly from Nicosia and Limassol, as numerous citizens became trapped in elevators due to the sudden loss of electricity.
Authorities are currently working to restore power supplies island-wide. As of the latest reports, investigations into the precise cause of the major generation loss are ongoing, and officials continue to manage the restoration efforts to bring power back to affected consumers.
