Former Limassol mayor Nikos Nikolaidis endorses Sofia Christodoulou for EDEK presidency

Nikos Nikolaidis, the former mayor of Limassol, has officially announced his support for Sofia Christodoulou-Makri’s candidacy for the presidency of the EDEK party. The endorsement, made public on August 21, 2026, ahead of the internal party elections scheduled for September 5, emphasizes the need for a radical change in the organization’s leadership and strategic direction.

In a public statement titled "Time for a clear choice," Nikolaidis expressed that his decision is rooted in his recent return to the party after a decade-long absence. He voiced strong criticism regarding the party’s performance in recent years, characterizing its trajectory as a process of self-destruction that resulted in the loss of its parliamentary representation. He pointedly criticized individuals who he claims bear responsibility for the policies that led to the party’s current state of decline.

Nikolaidis argues that Christodoulou-Makri is the most authentic representative capable of leading the necessary transformation of the party.
