Marina Vernikou explores WWII aircraft wreck off Iraklia

Marina Vernikou, a businesswoman and photography enthusiast married to Cypriot entrepreneur Miltos Kambouridis, recently shared footage from a scuba diving expedition at Alimia beach in Iraklia, Greece. During her visit, she captured underwater video of a German Arado AR 196 reconnaissance seaplane that has rested on the seabed for decades.

The wreckage is situated at a depth of approximately 9 to 11 meters. According to historical information shared by Vernikou, the aircraft was downed in 1943 following an aerial battle with British forces during the Second World War. The site remains a notable historical landmark in the region, attracting those interested in both diving and naval history.

This excursion highlights the ongoing interest in the underwater cultural heritage of the Greek islands. Vernikou, who is known for her photography, used the platform to document the state of the wreckage, which remains a submerged testament to the intense military conflicts that took place in the Aegean Sea during the 1940s.
