Reports dating from August 15 through August 21 describe the presence of brown sludge, white floating material, strong odors resembling sewage, and household waste such as diapers and plastics. Critics, including Mr. Mavrikios, have publicly demanded that authorities take responsibility for the deteriorating state of the swimming waters.

While residents have documented the incidents with photos and videos, official confirmation regarding the composition of the pollutants remains pending laboratory testing.
