Prince Harry and Elton John ordered to pay legal costs to Associated Newspapers
On August 21, 2026, it was announced that Prince Harry, Elton John, and five other high-profile figures were ordered to pay approximately 9.54 million pounds in legal costs to Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). This financial judgment follows the July 7 dismissal of their lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail, in which the plaintiffs alleged that the company had utilized illegal information-gathering methods to violate their privacy.
The group of claimants, which also included David Furnish, Sir Simon Hughes, Sadie Frost, Liz Hurley, and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, failed to prove their allegations in court. Justice Nicklin presided over the proceedings, during which dozens of witnesses testified, including the Duke of Sussex, who traveled from the United States to attend. ANL, which consistently denied any wrongdoing, was represented by its current and former staff who rejected all accusations of illegal conduct. The payment is considered a mandatory advance against the newspaper's legal fees following the court's rejection of the claims.
