Polis Chrysochous mayor demands intervention for stalled development projects
The Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Giotis Papachristofi, has formally requested an urgent meeting with the President of Cyprus to address significant delays affecting two major regional infrastructure projects: the construction of a sewage system and the expansion of Latsi Harbor. The mayor warns that these delays threaten the cancellation of vital developments essential for the area's economic and tourism growth.
The sewage system project, which was originally scheduled for tender in March 2026, has been stalled due to the inability of the Paphos District Organization for Local Government (EOA) to finance a seven-million-euro rainwater network intended to run parallel to the sewage lines. Simultaneously, the mayor alleges that private interests and certain government departments are obstructing the Latsi Harbor expansion, citing unjustified delays by the Environmental Authority in reviewing the project plans. Concerns are mounting that potential requests for design modifications could further jeopardize the initiative, resulting in millions of euros in additional costs for the municipality.
Mayor Papachristofi has submitted a letter to the President seeking direct intervention to resolve these administrative and financial bottlenecks. The municipality continues to monitor the situation, as the uncertainty surrounding both projects complicates local planning and long-term investment strategies for the Polis Chrysochous region.
