BBC and Mediazona identify over 241,000 Russian war casualties

A collaborative investigative effort by the BBC Russian service, the independent media outlet Mediazona, and a network of volunteers has confirmed the identities of 241,088 Russian military personnel killed since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The data, derived exclusively from publicly available records, underscores that the actual death toll is significantly higher than the confirmed list.

Demographic analysis reveals that 56% of those identified were not professional soldiers at the war's onset, comprising volunteers, mobilized civilians, and prisoners recruited from correctional facilities. The average age of these casualties is 38, which is 13 years older than the average age recorded during the initial months of the conflict. This shift highlights a change in the composition of Russian forces, moving away from elite, highly-trained units toward a reliance on recruits drawn directly from civilian and penal populations.
