Four-year-old boy dies following meningitis complications in Cyprus
A four-year-old boy named Marios passed away on August 21, 2026, at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia, following weeks of treatment for viral meningitis. The child had been declared brain-dead after suffering from severe cerebral oedema, which reportedly developed around July 14 during his transfer to the hospital.
The child's medical journey began on July 8 when he was admitted to Limassol General Hospital with a fever and diagnosed with meningitis. His family has since filed serious complaints regarding the medical treatment provided, alleging negligence, delays, and critical omissions, including the unavailability of an MRI machine at the facility. These claims prompted a public protest on August 10 outside Limassol General Hospital, where citizens gathered to support the family.
In response to the tragic news, the Municipality of Kourion cancelled a scheduled music festival event on August 21 as a gesture of mourning and solidarity with the family, who have local community ties. Authorities have confirmed that both police and internal investigations into the medical handling of the case are currently underway. An autopsy to formally determine the circumstances of the death is scheduled for Monday.
