Nicosia municipality launches architectural competition for historic Municipal Gardens regeneration
The Nicosia municipality has officially launched an architectural competition for the regeneration of the historic Municipal Gardens. The project, which has an estimated budget of €4.1 million plus VAT, aims to preserve the site's architectural heritage while modernizing the 34,000-square-meter public space for residents and visitors. The project is co-financed by the Nicosia Green Line Area Revitalization Program (2023-2027) and the local municipality.
Interested parties must submit their proposals by November 10, 2026, with the winner announced on December 1, 2026. The winning architect will be awarded the contract to oversee the full study. Following the selection process, the design and licensing phase is expected to take between 9 and 12 months. The final construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
The Municipal Gardens, dating back to 1901, represent a key cultural landmark in the capital. Originally named Victoria Garden, the site underwent major renovations in the late 1960s under architect Neoptolemos Michaelides. The new regeneration project focuses on conserving the historical character of the area while ensuring that any proposed structural changes are reversible to maintain the site's authenticity.
