Marcos Rodriguez Pantoja, known as the 'Spanish Mowgli', dies at 80
Marcos Rodriguez Pantoja, famously known as the 'Spanish Mowgli', passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 80 in Ourense, Spain. Born in 1946 in Añora, Córdoba, Pantoja endured a traumatic childhood marked by the death of his mother and abuse by his stepmother. Around 1953, his father sent the seven-year-old to the Sierra Morena mountains to work alongside an elderly shepherd. Following the death of the shepherd, Pantoja remained in the wilderness for 11 to 12 years, surviving alone by setting traps and foraging for food.
During his time in the wilderness, Pantoja formed a unique bond with a local pack of wolves, which he later described as his only source of companionship and the happiest period of his life. His story gained international fame, serving as the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and anthropological studies. While researchers later clarified that he was not literally raised by wolves, his narrative remains a significant account of extreme survival and social isolation. Pantoja was eventually reintegrated into human society in 1965, at the age of 19, after being discovered.
