Migrant boat sinks off Tunisia coast with 11 confirmed dead

A migrant boat carrying 15 people, mostly young individuals, sank off the Tunisian coast shortly after departing for Italy in the early hours of Thursday. Tunisian authorities, including the Coast Guard, military, and Civil Protection units, have launched a massive search operation supported by two helicopters to locate three remaining individuals who are still missing.

While initial reports suggested two survivors, subsequent updates confirmed the discovery of 11 bodies by the Coast Guard, with only one survivor found by a commercial ship. The lone survivor reported drifting at sea for nearly 48 hours before his rescue. The second individual previously reported as a survivor in critical condition was not accounted for in the later verified death toll.

Tunisia has historically served as a primary departure point for migrants seeking to reach Europe, though departure numbers have dropped over the last two years due to tighter maritime controls and border enforcement. Human rights organizations have criticized the EU-Tunisia migration deal, alleging that it contributes to human rights abuses. This tragedy underscores the continued danger of the central Mediterranean route, where the International Organization for Migration reports that nearly 900 people have died or gone missing so far this year.
