Critical blood shortage reported across Cyprus in August

Cyprus is facing a significant blood supply shortage during August, a period characterized by a notable decrease in donors due to the summer holiday season. Androula Panagiotou, head of the Blood Center, reported that the nation requires 350 units of blood daily to meet the needs of hospitals and clinics, yet current donation levels have fallen far below this target.

On August 17, only 100 donors visited blood collection centers, creating a concerning deficit. The constant demand for blood is driven by patients requiring regular transfusions, including those with thalassemia, cancer, or leukemia, as well as emergency cases such as accidents and scheduled surgical procedures. Although hospitals remain operational, officials warn that the current depletion of reserves threatens the ability to respond to medical emergencies.

The Blood Center has issued an urgent public appeal for healthy individuals to visit local collection points. While there is a small reserve currently available, it is rapidly dwindling. Officials emphasize that the need for blood is a year-round issue that becomes particularly acute when regular donors are away, and they are urging citizens to prioritize donations to ensure the continuity of essential medical treatments.
