Cyprus to upgrade airport passport control systems with 40 new ABC gates
The Republic of Cyprus is preparing for the implementation of the European Entry-Exit System by replacing its existing passport control infrastructure. Minister of Justice and Public Order Costas Fytiris confirmed that the government has ordered 40 state-of-the-art Automated Border Control (ABC) gates. These units are expected to be delivered by the end of 2026 and will be installed in passenger terminals at the country's two airports as soon as possible.
The procurement follows a parliamentary question from DISY MP George Pamboridis regarding current inefficiencies, specifically the necessity for travelers to undergo manual police checks after using existing automated kiosks. Minister Fytiris explained that the current Interactive Kiosks were chosen previously for their size and speed, but their limitations led to the dual-check procedure.
Looking ahead, the Ministry noted that the integration of Cyprus into the Schengen Area and the subsequent removal of internal border controls will eventually render the current interactive kiosk system obsolete. The new ABC gates are intended to modernize the transit process and streamline security protocols for international travelers entering and exiting the country.
