Turkey maps military cemeteries and memorials abroad

The Turkish Ministry of Defence has released an online map documenting 172 military cemeteries and memorials located across 48 countries. The project, which took approximately one year to complete, was conducted by the General Directorate of Mapping in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).

According to Lieutenant Colonel Fatih Kale, who coordinated the initiative, the data was cross-checked with academic and military institutions to ensure accuracy. The documented sites span several continents and include over 20 locations within the occupied areas of Cyprus. This project aims to record the final resting places of military personnel and state officials who died abroad.

While the current database is extensive, officials indicate that the total number of sites is expected to grow. Historical records suggest that additional graves remain in various villages and former battlefields that have not yet been fully documented, prompting plans for further research to identify and include these sites in future updates.
