Public debate emerges over the future of Cyprus's health system
On August 21 and 22, 2026, a public discussion emerged between politician Yiannis Karousos and former Health Minister George Pamboridis regarding the future of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) in Cyprus. Karousos proposed initiating a dialogue for a 'GeSY 2.0,' citing the Israeli model as a potential example for reform. He advocated for increased competition in quality, better prevention, improved transparency, and stronger regulatory oversight, emphasizing that the focus should remain on social protection.
Former Minister Pamboridis, who played a central role in the initial legislative design and implementation of the current system, challenged the proposal. He suggested that the arguments for such models have already been extensively debated in the past. Critics and media outlets have questioned whether the focus should shift to 'GeSY 2.0' or if the primary objective must remain the correct execution and full implementation of the current system. Karousos clarified in response that his proposal does not intend to privatize the system or weaken its universal character, but rather to evolve it while maintaining its social pillars and ensuring the autonomy of public hospitals.
