Marios Georgiou wins silver medal and Shooting Star award at European Gymnastics Championships

Cypriot gymnast Marios Georgiou secured the silver medal on the horizontal bar at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Zagreb, Croatia, in August 2026. Georgiou performed an exceptional routine, finishing with a score of 14.200. He was surpassed only by Great Britain’s Joe Fraser, who took gold with 14.300, while Russian athlete Savelii Sieedin finished third with 14.066. This achievement marks the 29-year-old athlete’s seventh medal in European Championships.

In addition to his podium performance, Georgiou was honored with the prestigious "SmartScoring Shooting Star" award, an accolade established in 2018 to recognize athletes with exceptional life stories who serve as an inspiration to future generations. Coached by Panayiotis Petrides, Georgiou continues to be a pioneering figure in Cypriot gymnastics, having previously achieved historic success at the 2022 Munich European Championships and beyond. Beyond individual accolades, the event also marked a significant milestone for Cyprus as the national team qualified for the World Championships for the first time in history. The athlete remains focused on his ongoing career and future competition goals following these successes in Zagreb.
