EDEK party faces leadership contest after electoral defeat
The Cypriot political party EDEK, founded by Vassos Lyssarides, is undergoing a pivotal leadership transition following a historic defeat in recent parliamentary elections. For the first time since its founding, the party failed to secure any parliamentary seats, leading to significant internal friction and the subsequent resignation of party president Nikos Anastasiou. His departure was triggered by conflicting interpretations of decisions made during the party’s recent congress.
Four candidates have entered the race to lead the party: Sofia Christodoulou, Marios Hannidis, Giorgos Kouttoukis, and Kyriakos Mavronikolas. While the first three have publicly shared their visions for the party's future, Mavronikolas has declined all media interviews. The newly elected president will be tasked with steering EDEK through a statutory and electoral congress to resolve internal instability and define the movement’s path toward modernization and reconnecting with the electorate.
