Safety concerns rise following serious jet ski accident in Pernera
On August 15, a serious maritime accident occurred in the Pernera area of Cyprus when a jet ski operated by a 17-year-old collided with a towed inflatable carrying five family members. The incident resulted in severe injuries to a 48-year-old father and his 7-year-old daughter. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the collision, which involved a second individual, an 18-year-old, on the jet ski.
This event has highlighted broader concerns regarding maritime safety, including the supervision of water sports and shortages in lifeguard staffing at various beaches. Statistics from the Marine Accidents and Incidents Investigation Section indicate that between 2008 and 2025, there were 13 deaths and three disappearances linked to recreational sea activities. While this recent accident is not directly related to the reported drowning incidents, it has intensified calls for the full implementation of new recreational craft legislation passed by parliament in February 2026. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities evaluate existing safety protocols and the enforcement of current maritime regulations.
