Serious jet ski accident in Pernera sparks safety concerns
On August 15, 2026, a serious accident occurred in the Pernera sea area when a jet ski operated by a 17-year-old female collided with an inflatable water toy being towed. The collision resulted in the severe injury of a 48-year-old father and his 7-year-old daughter, who were among five family members on the inflatable craft. The incident is currently under police investigation.
The accident has reignited public debate regarding maritime safety in Cyprus, highlighting concerns over the operation of recreational watercraft and the adequacy of lifeguard staffing at local beaches. While the accident and lifeguard shortages are distinct issues, they collectively underscore systemic safety deficiencies. Authorities are also facing questions regarding the implementation of new legislation for recreational vessels, which was passed by Parliament in February 2026 but has not yet been fully enforced.
Data from the Shipping Deputy Ministry indicates that between 2008 and 2025, Cypriot waters recorded 13 deaths and three disappearances related to recreational activities, averaging nearly one fatality per year. These figures do not account for numerous severe injuries, such as the widely known 2017 case of Rachel Hatzitofi, which further emphasizes the need for stricter safety measures and improved regulation of maritime sports.
