Femicide and suicide incident in Nea Smyrni

On the early morning of Sunday, August 23, 2026, a 45-year-old woman of Albanian descent was shot and killed outside an apartment building on Grigoriou Kydonion Street 3 in Nea Smyrni, Athens. Following the attack, the 48-year-old perpetrator, also of Albanian descent, committed suicide at the scene using the same revolver.

Police investigations, supported by security camera footage, revealed that the perpetrator had staged an ambush, waiting for the victim near her residence. Forensic evidence and video analysis suggest the man forced the woman to her knees before shooting her in the head. The victim had been visiting her daughter, who resides in the building. While the perpetrator was previously known to Albanian authorities for alleged 2016 offenses including domestic violence and stalking, his specific motive in this case remains under investigation.

Authorities are currently examining the nature of the personal relationship between the two individuals, including electronic devices and financial records, such as a recent 1,000-euro withdrawal by the suspect. The perpetrator's wife has provided a statement, claiming no prior knowledge of the relationship. Police continue to process evidence to fully reconstruct the events leading to the fatal incident.
