Driver arrested for animal cruelty after killing dog in Corfu
On the early morning of Saturday, August 22, 2026, a driver in the village of Avliotes, Corfu, deliberately ran over and killed a dog that was sleeping on the street. Surveillance footage circulating online shows the vehicle slowing down upon noticing the animal but then continuing to drive over it. Instead of providing assistance to the injured dog, which was seen struggling to stand before dying shortly after, the driver accelerated and fled the scene.
Following the incident, officers from the North Corfu Police Station arrested the driver and have formally opened a case file. Under current Greek animal welfare laws, the perpetrator faces significant legal consequences, including a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years and fines reaching 50,000 euros. The authorities have taken a firm stance on the matter, and the investigation remains ongoing as the suspect is referred to the public prosecutor.
