Large-scale climate demonstration planned in Sweden ahead of elections
Approximately 10,000 protesters are expected to gather in Sweden this Sunday for a major climate demonstration, occurring less than a month before the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 13. The event, starting at 1:00 PM local time, features an unprecedented coalition of dozens of associations, labor unions, NGOs, and youth organizations, as highlighted by Beatrice Rivendell of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. With 37% of voters ranking environmental protection as a top priority in recent polls, the issue has become a central focus of the current electoral campaign.
The demonstration serves as a critique of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s conservative government, which has been in power since 2022 with the support of the Sweden Democrats. Official supervisory bodies have repeatedly warned that the government risks missing national climate targets, which include a 70% reduction in transport-related CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2010 levels and achieving climate neutrality by 2045. Critics point to the administration's decisions to reduce fuel taxes and relax supply restrictions as factors that have led to increased emissions, directly undermining the country’s progress toward its long-term environmental goals.
