Cyprus reaches historic milestone with Kronos gas field final investment decision

Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianos, announced in a recent interview with Middle East Economic Survey (MEES) that the Republic of Cyprus has reached a final investment decision (FID) for the Kronos gas field located in Block 6. This development marks the first time an offshore gas discovery in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone has transitioned from the exploration stage to commercial development.

The project aims to utilize existing Egyptian infrastructure to achieve the first production of natural gas by 2028. While Minister Damianos noted that it is premature to cite specific fiscal figures, he emphasized that the project will provide significant benefits, including technology transfer, increased international investor confidence, and enhanced energy security. The scope of the interview, conducted on August 18 in Nicosia, also addressed other strategic energy plans, including the status of the Aphrodite field, current findings by ExxonMobil, and developments regarding the Great Sea Interconnector project.

This milestone confirms Cyprus's capability to move beyond resource discovery toward active production. The government plans to continue focusing on these infrastructure developments to secure the country’s energy future.
