Fire breaks out in Deryneia residence due to mobile phone charger

In the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2026, a fire broke out at a two-storey residence in Deryneia, Cyprus. Fire services were alerted to the incident at approximately 03:40. According to the Fire Service spokesperson, Andreas Kettis, the fire originated in a minor's bedroom where a mobile phone had been left on a bed while connected to a charger.

Upon noticing the flames, the minor immediately exited the room and alerted their parents, allowing the entire family to evacuate the premises safely without sustaining any injuries. Two staffed fire engines were deployed to the scene to extinguish the blaze. While the inhabitants escaped unharmed, the bedroom suffered extensive damage from the fire and heat, and the rest of the upper floor was also affected. Authorities have identified the mobile phone and its charger as the source of the ignition.
