Cypriot woman detained by occupation authorities at Ayios Dometios crossing

A 45-year-old woman, a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus, was detained by occupation authorities on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the Ayios Dometios crossing. Her 47-year-old husband reported the incident to the Cyprus Police, stating that his wife was apprehended while attempting to return from the occupied areas to government-controlled territory. The detention was reportedly triggered by a technical error occurring on the previous day, Friday, when the woman allegedly crossed out of the occupied areas without undergoing a mandatory identity registration check.

Following the report, the Cyprus Police informed the bicommunal Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters about the detention. According to confirmed information from the Cyprus News Agency, the 45-year-old woman is currently being held at a police station in occupied Nicosia. She is scheduled to appear before a military court in the occupied areas on Thursday to address the charges related to the border crossing procedure.
