DISY party calls for urgent energy strategy regarding the Great Sea Interconnector

In late August 2026, the Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus, led by Annita Demetriou, emphasized the critical strategic importance of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. The party urged the Cypriot government to abandon internal disputes and hesitations, noting that Greece is already leading the way with a clear vision for the project. The GSI is considered vital for ending Cyprus’s energy isolation and strengthening geopolitical cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, Israel, France, the United States, and the European Union.

DISY highlighted that the entry of a strong French investment group and the submission of an investment application by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) for the Cyprus-Israel link represent a new positive momentum for the project. The party stressed that the government must act with seriousness and clarity to ensure the project's realization.

Beyond the GSI, DISY called for a comprehensive national energy plan to address rising costs and the impact of the Middle East crisis. Proposed measures include investments in energy storage, solar power, infrastructure upgrades, and preparing for the European Union's emissions trading system for heating and transport fuels, which will take effect on January 1, 2028. The party warned that failure to plan now will impose significant costs on households and businesses.
